A tournament was held in Eastleigh for the street youths. A total of 20 teams signed up. Last year we had a total of 12 teams. The first two day went on smoothly but then we started having problems concerning the refereeing; the other teams were feeling that there was some kind of favoring from the referees. So on the third day fights started due to lack of trust. So Anthony and Kennedy were forced to postpone all games. The final day it got worse and we had to report this to the local authorities, this led us not having the first and second positions for the tournament. So probably after the festive season we might hold the finals when all has calm down. But at least we got a third position, they got medals and some money.
Two teams from Mathare slums area were the ones causing all the commotion, but later were joined by a team from Eastleigh. They were coming to the playground with machetes, so it was not a safe place to be, non of these teams were accepting defeat. The good thing is all the teams from the streets guys accepted defeat and were satisfied. The next tournament we will make sure we only have streets guys join in, not any other teams.
Made in The Streets also got a chance to give away Christmas present to the streets guys. Bundles of clothes were bought and some from well wishers like our kids got to give out clothes and shoes they don't use to the street guys. After this exercise we all sat for a meal together. There was over 200 streets guys that showed up. The same was done to mothers and young mothers that live on the streets who normally come to our Monday program.
